Join us for a very special Wonder Mountain Jamswells extravaganza edition on Thursday 4th of September in the Tanswell’s back room!
Jamswells is the freewheeling and fun, full volume jam night / open mic based on the historic ‘Free & Sleazy’ jam nights run by the the Mayday Hills asylum workers on their payday (3rd Thursday of the month - same as Jamswells) from the early 70s to the late 90s in the very same room at Tanswell’s Hotel in Beechworth. Everyone is welcome, and anything goes!
With so many fine folk in town for the amazing Wonder Mountain festival at Tanswells, we thought it only fitting to get the party started early and meet them on stage! Come for a play, come for listen, come for a boogie or do it all! Kicks off at 7pm-ish.
Jumbuck is the solo project of Nathaniel Peacock, one half of Melbourne duo Norwood, with folk and country sensibilities at the forefront of the music.
"No Lights" is the first release from Jumbuck, and is being celebrated with a tour through Victoria, New South Wales and the ACT.
Supported by Well Into Winter, Jumbuck will perform a collection of songs, musings and tongue-in-cheek observations at Tanswells.
Sammy Luka’s Sundown Band is touring to support Sammy Luka’s second full-length record, "Young Man in a Far Away Town".
Formerly known as Sundown Ever Sundown, Sammy Luka’s Sundown Band marks a new phase for Sam. After several years of studying, writing, and performing in Melbourne, he has returned to Newcastle with a new album and a fresh five-piece band.
Together they will deliver an exciting folk n’ roll show -- with support from Jasmin Adria (solo) in Beechworth.
Runners and the Young take a modern production to a classic Australian sound, with dashes of experienced US alt-country, and classic British post-punk for good measure.
It reflects the country that we live in: panoramic, open, lush and diamond-hard in equal parts. Great songs underpinned by superb production and beautifully put together arrangements.
One of our favourite songwriters returns to the pub: Benny Williams! And on Grand Final Day no less!
The first Friday of each month means Torpedoes! Blues & Old School Rock'n'Roll!!
Melbourne singer/songwriter Amaya Laucirica will launch her highly anticipated fifth album ‘The Blue Hour’ at Tanswells in Beechworth.
Described as “gorgeous classic songwriting in the Forster/McLennan mould” by Alan Brough (Spicks and Specks), the night will showcase Laucirica’s world-class band with Mat Watson and Matt Sigley.
'The Blue Hour' is Laucirica’s compelling meditation on the nuances of motherhood, identity, acceptance and connection. All of which comes together on its centrepiece single, ‘Now or Never’ – a sonic articulation of the moment when the sun breaks the blue morning light and the world becomes clear again.
Los Angeles six-piece Swimming Bell bring their lush Californian alt-folk to Australia for the first time this October. Compared to a folk-era Sharon Van Etten, Meg Baird and Rosali, Swimming Bell is the musical project of Katie Schottland, a Philadelphia-born singer-songwriter whose ethereal melodies and intricate harmonies create a dreamlike sonic landscape.
Drawing inspiration from folk traditions, layered vocal textures and atmospheric production, Schottland crafts songs both intimate and otherworldly. Their latest EP, "Somnia', produced by Rob Schnapf (Elliott Smith, Beck), deepens this signature sound, immersing listeners in an underwater dreamworld of floating melodies and percussive currents.
With influences from Laurel Canyon folk to modern indie experimentalism, "Somnia" showcases Schottland’s ability to blend warmth with mystery, nostalgia with newness.
Tanswell's is thrilled to host the acclaimed Los Angeles folk trio Sylvie on their second Australian tour!
In 1975, John Schwab and his band “Mad Anthony” sat in a barn in Southern California and recorded their songs. It was a narrative that was common during this period - the band was close to a record deal but it never came, and the tapes were stored in a box in a closet. Decades later, in a small town in Ohio, his son Ben Schwab came across them. The recordings would imprint a sound and feeling that he would end up chasing. They were timeless, effortless, and soulful. A harmonic birthright.
Ben had a long career as a professional inline skater that sent waves through the subculture, before watching the industry fade away. Following a period at CalArts, he formed his first band, Golden Daze, and later joined the group Drugdealer. Sylvie is the full return to the musical lineage and spirit that lived in all those lost yet beloved cassettes and reels. True to Mad Anthony’s form, Ben and his friends also sat around in a garage in LA to make these recordings. Of course his father’s voice is featured prominently, he sings one of the songs. Not much has changed.
